Understanding masculinities, gender norms and intimate partner violence in men’s intimate relationships with female sex workers of Northern Karnataka

Understanding masculinities, gender norms and intimate partner violence in mens intimate relationships with female sex workers of Northern Karnataka.pdf

How do we understand the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and ideas of masculinity among the intimate partners (IPs) of female sex workers? This poster by Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) in collaboration with University of Manitoba and University of Texas at San Antonio, argues that partner violence is a norm in their study community.

The poster demonstrates results from the following themes:

  • work conditions and gender relations
  • norms surrounding body image
  • relationship dynamics and money
  • perceptions of sex workers
  • media, nationalism and masculinity

Men believe that they are expected to use partner violence and they will lose their status and position if they do not. Relationships with sex workers are guided by men’s ideas of masculinity and have general low value of women. Interventions with sex workers and their IPs would need to address their perceptions and norms.
