Parivartan uses sports coaching as a tool for teaching young men about gender equity, respect for girls and women, and gender based violence in India. The programme, which was implemented in Mumbai between 2008 and 2012, leveraged the influence of cricket coaches as role models in the lives of adolescent boys, training them to promote gender-equitable attitudes among young athletes between 10 and 16 years old. The existing Parivartan programme, which was implemented in 45 schools across Mumbai, has witnessed promising changes in gender-related attitudes, beliefs and behaviours not only among the participating athletes but also among the coaches themselves.
With funding from STRIVE, ICRW-ARO plans to take this model further, by integrating new modules and activities to address sexuality, HIV, reproductive health, stigma and substance use, with a view to reducing HIV risk and vulnerability.
