Evaluation of community mobilization and empowerment: HIV prevention among female sex workers in India

KHPT Evaluation of Community Mobilization.pdf

Do we need a distinct conceptual framework to assess empowerment and HIV vulnerability amongst female sex workers (FSW)?

While community mobilization has been widely endorsed, there is little systematic documentation of its role in HIV prevention.

A new report by STRIVE member KHPT explores the power dynamics involved in community mobilization among FSW in Karnataka state, South India. The research explores the associations between community mobilization, empowerment, social transformation, HIV risk and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Findings demonstrate how community mobilization acts through different domains of power (power within, power with and power over). For example, membership in a sex worker collective was associated with access to social entitlements and reduced violence and coercion.
