This poster was originally presented at the AIDS2018 Conference.
It presents findings from a study that aimed to understand the aspirations of adolescent girls and young women aged 14-24 years, what influences these aspirations, and how aspirations are related with sexual decision making.
Improving measures of Transactional Sex - an imperative for understanding adolescent girls and young women's HIV risk in Sub-Saharan Africa
This oral presentation was originally given by Kirsten Stobenau from the International Center for Research on Women, at the AIDS2018 conference.
The presentation describes STRIVE's application of social science towards strengthening measures of transactional sex with a specific aim of improving measurement in large-scale, repeat, multi-country study efforts such as the Demographic and Health Surveys.
Technical brief: Transactional sex and HIV risk: from analysis to action
Engagement in transactional sex is significantly associated with increased HIV prevalence in women. In a review of this association, across eligible studies, women who had ever practiced transactional sex were on average 50% more likely to be living with HIV than women who had never practiced transactional sex.
Measuring gender norms associated with transactional sex for adolescent girls and young women in Central Uganda – Implications for structural intervention
This poster was originally presented at the AIDS2018 Conference.
It presents the results of a study in Uganda that explored social norm influences on transactional sex using experimental vignettes to identify and assess gender norms stemming from the shared expectation that men should provide financial support to their partners.
Impact case study: Questions on transactional sex in the DHS
As of 2015, the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) include improved questions to capture the practice of transactional sex for women and men. Similar questions are now included in the Violence against Children surveys (VACS), evaluations of the Transfer project and other cash transfer studies in South Africa and Tanzania and numerous individual studies including at least one surveillance site. As a result, survey data can be expected to shed light on:

Key thematic resource pages
STRIVE have produced a wide range of academic and accessible resources which are available on our website. In 2017, we began compiling our most important thematic resources into one-page handouts to share online and at important meetings and conferences. These one-pagers provide a thematic map to our website and are available to download below.
Young women’s perceptions of transactional sex and sexual agency: a qualitative study in the context of rural South Africa
Evidence shows that HIV prevalence among young women in sub-Saharan Africa increases almost five-fold between ages 15 and 24, with almost a quarter of young women infected by their early-to mid-20s. Transactional sex or material exchange for sex is a relationship dynamic that has been shown to have an association with HIV infection.
Transactional sex and HIV risk among young women in rural South Africa - Meghna Ranganathan
Young women aged 15-24 in sub-Saharan Africa are 3-4 times more likely to be HIV-infected than boys or men of the same age. Transactional sex - sex exchanged for material possessions or favours - is a significant source of HIV risk in young women.
This Learning Lab describes analysis, key findings and implications from the HPTN 068 Swa Koteka Conditional Cash Transfer trial.
Transactional Sex: What it is and why it matters
Adolescent girls, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, are at high risk of HIV infection. Transactional sex seems to be a factor in shaping their vulnerability. But what is transactional sex exactly? What motivates young women and adolescent girls to engage in this practice? And what can we do to address the HIV risk involved?
Based on research and analysis by the STRIVE research consortium, this 7-minute video explains:
