Rates of HIV among young women (15-24) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are disproportionately high. Young women have HIV rates two times that of young men and account for 31% of new infections in SSA. ‘Transactional sex’ (TS) is seen as an important infection risk – but what does the term mean? There is ongoing confusion and disagreement about the definition and determinants of TS.

Understanding masculinities, gender norms and intimate partner violence in men’s intimate relationships with female sex workers of Northern Karnataka

How do we understand the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and ideas of masculinity among the intimate partners (IPs) of female sex workers? This poster by Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) in collaboration with University of Manitoba and University of Texas at San Antonio, argues that partner violence is a norm in their study community.

Global literature on female sex workers suggests that being in an intimate relationship is associated with barriers to practising safe sex behaviours. Condom use within intimate relationships is often seen as a sign of infidelity and fosters mistrust which can affect the longevity of a relationship as well as trust and intimacy between partners.
