Technical brief: HIV risk and violence against women and girls

Technical brief Violence against women and girls.pdf

HIV and violence constitute twin and often interconnected epidemics. Growing evidence shows that many forms of intimate partner violence – physical, sexual and psychological – increase susceptibility to HIV and disease progression in women and girls.

This STRIVE technical brief synthesises the existing evidence on the links between violence against women and girls (VAWG) and HIV, and highlights STRIVE's contribution to the field, including a tool for measuring intimate partner violence and the results of several research trials and projects in Uganda, South Africa, India and Tanzania.

The key messages discussed in the brief are:

  • the multiple direct and indirect pathways that link VAWG and HIV
  • outcomes from STRIVE research that show it is possible to reduce VAWG and improve HIV outcomes
  • how addressing VAWG upstream has achieved multiple health and development outcomes
