Redefining masculinity: An interview with Dr Ravi Verma

In this interview, Dr Ravi Verma, head of International Center for Research on Women - Asia (ICRW-ARO), talks about the need to start challenging how we define masculinity, in order to reduce discrimination against women.

Dr Verma unpacks why unhealthy expectations about what it means to "be a man" is harming our efforts to tackle inequality around the world.

I’ve seen men breaking down talking on these issues. There are many boys who are trying to challenge these norms because they themselves are oppressed in this oppressive regime of gender. Men realise it. Boys realise it. But they don’t have the courage, they don’t have the collective voice to question it. These men and boys who want to challenge these are not accepted as part of the mainstream men’s world.

The interventions implemented by ICRW-ARO provide a platform and safe spaces for boys and men to openly voice and discuss these issues.

The clip was released on International Women’s Day on 8 March 2016.
