Structural drivers at the South African AIDS Conference

15 July 2013
Alexandra Hyde and Lawrence Mashimbye

Last month WRHI’s Lawrence Mashimbye attended the 6th South Africa AIDS Conference in Durban. He reported a wide range of presentations relevant to research on the structural drivers of HIV. Among many interesting findings pertaining to debates on structural interventions, highlights included:

  • A longitudinal study of HIV risk reduction in adolescent girls through social welfare grants (Lucie Cluver, Oxford University / University of Cape Town)
  • An evaluation of the Stepping Stones project, a behavioural and structural pilot intervention for young people (Rachel Jewkes, Gender and Health Research Unit, South African Medical Research Council)
  • Lessons learned from using social media such as Facebook and twitter to mobilise young people for HIV testing (Sibongile Mdletshe, University of Pretoria)
  • Evidence from Soul City on the link between alcohol consumption and HIV risk (Renay Weiner and Savera Kalideen, Soul City)
