Special journal issue on the structural drivers of HIV

Published today, a special issue of Journal of the International AIDS Society draws attention to the role of structural drivers in HIV programmes. The editorial, co-authored by STRIVE's Charlotte Watts and Lori Heise, poses the provocative question: 'Addressing the structural drivers of HIV: a luxury or necessity for programmes?'

Only a comprehensive HIV response will eliminate AIDS: this premise underlies the arguments here. The papers propose that such a response must target the social, political, economic and environmental factors that affect HIV risk and vulnerability. In the context of declining resources for HIV/AIDS, responses to structural drivers must be integrated into future investments in development, gender and HIV frameworks.
