An article in South Africa's Sunday Independent outlines some of the difficulties faced by campaigners working to reduce excessive alcohol consumption and the attendant health risks. The article is written by Lebo Ramafoko, chief executive of STRIVE affiliate Soul City. In particular, it illustrates some of the corporate interests that make alcohol reduction a controversial issue.

The article focuses on campaigns such as Phuza Wize, which advocate a ban on alcohol advertising. It cuts through some of the heightened discourse and counter-claims of the alcohol industry to present a range of facts about the negative impact of alcohol consumption, arguing for interventions that reduce the "epidemic of alcohol-related harm" in South African society.
