Knowledge into action: Lessons learnt from research uptake and alliance building for alcohol policy change

In this session, STRIVE partner Soul City explains how their Phuza Wize initiative combined research, social mobilisation and alliance building to lobby for a public-health oriented alcohol policy in South Africa. Presenter Savera Kalideen will describe:

  • the use of research for a range of policy initiatives such as media briefings, policy submissions and social mobilisation
  • the advantages and strength of alliances in lobbying for policy change
  • the challenges and pitfalls of policy development processes

Savera Kalideen has worked in public health at Soul City for many years, and has focused on alcohol policy change for the last seven years. She was the chairperson of the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) from 2012-2014 and is currently the South Africa board member on that structure. SAAPA is affiliated to the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance. Savera is also the Soul City representative on the South African Health Promotion and Development Foundation Network.
